HIGH POINT — James Wayne Adams, 92, of Providence Place, graduated to Glory on Sunday night, June 22, 2008, in High Point, North Carolina.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 28, at Resthaven Funeral Chapel, followed by military graveside honors at Tecumseh Mission Cemetery.

James was born February 20, 1916, to James and Rachel Henderson Adams in Tecumseh, Oklahoma. He lived in Tecumseh until he was inducted into the United States Army prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

During World War II, he was stationed first with the Western Defense Command from Oregon to Mexico from 1941 to 1943. In 1943, he was deployed with the U.S. Armed Forces in the Far East Pacific, and was part of the New Guinea Campaign, The Battle of Leyte Gulf, Mindanao in the Southern Philippines, and The Army of Occupation in Japan as a Platoon Sgt. in the Medical Corps.

On VE Day, James was in New Guinea and on VJ Day he was in the Philippines. He was discharged November 30, 1945 and moved to Washington, D.C., where he was assigned to the Pentagon and then joined the U.S. Army Reserve and remained with the Reserve from 1945 until he retired a Command Sgt. Major in 1976. He also worked in Civil Service in Washington, D.C. James was called back into active duty in 1961 during the Berlin Airlift.

He was the last surviving sibling of ten; three sisters and six brothers.

James Wayne Adams is survived by daughter, Karen Adams of High Point, North Carolina and son, James E. Adams of Kent Island, Maryland. He has three grandsons, Dean Michael Adams and Brendan James Adams of Kent Island, Maryland and by George H. Smith, IV of High Point, N.C. He has one granddaughter, Shanon Elizabeth Adams of Houston, Texas. Also surviving are many loving nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by wives, Dolores (Dee) Adams in 1985 and Jewell Walker Adams in 2005.

Family visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, June 27, at Resthaven Funeral Chapel in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
