Sarah Ann Ridlen was the eighth chid of nine born to Samuel Ridlen and Sarah Davis; her siblings were: Lucinda Ridlen, Elizabeth (Ridlen) Ross, Patience Ridlen, Nancy Ridlen, Prudence (Ridlen) Mulford, Jane Duncan (Ridlen) Aiken, Martha Ann Ridlen, and Samuel Davis Ridlen.

She was united in marriage to Josiah Alexander on November 9, 1853 in St. Louis, Missouri, and they moved to Tennessee where the first two of their three children were born: Franklin Edgar Alexander, Cora Elizabeth (Alexander) Webb, They moved to Illinois and their third child, Laura May (Alexander) Beaty was born here.
