Samuel Davis Ridlen was the youngest of nine children born to Samuel Ridlen and Sarah Davis; his siblings being: Lucinda Ridlen, Elizabeth (Ridlen) Ross, Patience Ridlen (died young), Nancy Ridlen (died young), Prudence (Ridlen) Mulford, Jane (Ridlen) Duncan, Martha Ridlen, and Sarah Ann (Ridlen) Alexander.
Samuel Davis Ridlen entered service in the Confederate Army from Memphis, Tenn. He was taken prisoner and exchanged in Chicago, Ill. Having lost all property in Tennessee, he returned to Illinois.
He was united in marriage to Margaret A. Beard while in Tennessee, and their first three children were born there: Isaac M. Ridlen, Ida Ridlen, and Samuel, Jr. Upon his return from the war and to Illinois, they became the parents of three more - Irene (Ridlen) Williams, Thomas Ridlen, and William Ridlen.
