Thor Ellingsen Holum was born in 1847 on the Indreli gard, Flam parish, Aurland, Sogn, Norway of parents Elling Torsen Holum (1820-1908) and Ingeborg Kjellsdtr. Flam (1809-1897). He emigrated in 1851 at the age of 4 to America with parents and brother, Ole Ellingsen, age 6, and came in 1860 into Black Hammer township, rural Spring Grove, Houston County, Minn. A sister, Brita, was born after coming to America.
Thor was married to Anna Maria Otternes, daughter of Guttorm Olsen Otternes and Brita Ivarsdtr. Frondal Otternes, early pioneers of Black Hammer township. She was the first white child born in Black Hammer in 1854. *Guttorm and Brita are buried at Faith Lutheran Church Cemetery, Black Hammer, Houston County, Minnesota, but I cannot find any record for Anna Maria.
Thor's parents, Elling Torsen and Ingeborg Holum were located on a 20 acre home farm between 2 of the Winjum farms in north Black Hammer. Thor and Anna Maria lived in a valley east of the home farm on the Holum owned 80 acres adjoining the Vetere farm on the south.
Anna Maria Holum died in childbirth in 1875, age 21; the infant daughter, Maria, survived and was the only child of this marriage. Thor then married Karen Lie in 1879 in Black Hammer. The couple with children moved to Flom, Norman County, Minnesota. They became members of the Wild Rice Lutheran Church between Flom and Twin Valley.
Daughter, Maria, returned to Back Hammer when she was of confirmation age. Her home was with her grandmother, Brita Ivarsdtr. Frondal Otternes. This remained her home until her marriage in Black Hammer to Helmer K. Ike. Her Holum grandparents were also nearby.
