Matilda Delger was the oldest daughter of Frederick William Delger and Ernestina Blücher. She was disowned when she eloped with English Sea Captain John W Brown in Japan in about 1871. Following the deaths of son Herbert (age 5) and the Captain in Japan, she gathered up her 5 surviving children and returned to Oakland. Matilda took the embalmed body of Captain Brown with her. Captain Brown was buried in the Delger plot in the cemetery, and a gravestone was placed for Herbert. Matilda resided for a time with her sister and brother-in-law Annie and William Moller.
