Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was a prominent lawyer and a delegate at the Alabama Democratic State convention in 1860. In 1861, he joined the 3rd Alabama Regiment as a Captain and was latter appointed Colonel of the regiment. His command participated in the Battle of Seven Pines, in the Maryland Campaigns, the battles of Boonsboro and Sharpsburg. During the Battle of Fredericksburg he was seriously injured, but was able to take part in the Gettysburg Campaign. For distinguished service at Gettysburg, he was promoted Brigadier General in August 1863. He led a Brigade through the 1864 Overland Campaign, was wounded at Cedar Creek, and was unable to take the field again. After the war, he resumed legal practice and published the book "3rd Alabama! The Civil War Memoir of Brigadier General Battle, CSA."
