Wheatfield woman puts life back together after tragedy
by Shirey Conners/Staff Writer

A Wheatfied mother of six, who saw her husband shot to death 15 months ago in New Guinea where they were Christian missionaries, is picking up the pieces of her life.

Elaine Chappell, 49, is now a full-time student at State University college at Buffalo, (seeking a bachelor's degree) a foster parent of two, and caring for her youngest daughter, 14 year old Barbara, who also, saw her father killed....

An older daughter, Becky Chappell, 22, who is employed also lives at home.

... The couple, who had been married 31 years, was realizing 53 year old Robert Chappell's dream of serving the Lord as missionaries.

...The Chappells, with Mr. Chappell driving, were with two Michigan missonaries travling down a rural road near Lae, a city in Papusa, New Guinea, when Erik Mangen, a bandit, stepped from, the side of road to ambush the group. He shot a shotgun blast directly at Mr. Chappell, killing him instantly. Stray pellets also grazed one of the missionaries, she said.

Shortly before the July 5, 1985 shooting New Guinea police were called to investigate someone shooting at a public transportaion truck.

...(strange police systems)
"They lined up some suspects with other natives, including Mangen and asked the missionaries to face the group in a courtyard and point the finger at the killers," she said. "Our friends refused to do so in fear they would become marked for death.

...As far as Mrs. Chappell knows her husbands killer is still free.

He was somewhere in buried in New Guinea.
