Cynthia was born in New Hope, Lincoln County, Tennessee.

The exact date of her death is unknown. From census records, genealogists deduce that she died sometime between 1870 and 1880.

She was the daughter of James and Rachel (Young) Pitts .

She had fifteen siblings: Henry P., William A., Elizabeth H., Edna, Jane, Robert K., James L., Thomas B., Isaac R., Ephraim, Riley and Wiley (twins), Susanna, Rachel A. and Martha.

She married Hardy Dean
in 1836.

She was the mother of four Confederate soldiers: Aaron and Joseph were both killed in Franklin, Tennessee during the strife against Union forces (1864).
William and Thomas J. were both captured on November 30th of the same year, but were released a short time later, upon promising not to participate in any additional fighting against Union troops.
