Hardy was the son of Joseph Dean and Elizabeth (Edmondson) Dean .

He was the brother of Isabel, Russell, Aaron, Elizabeth, Minerva and Joseph Edmondson Dean I .

Was the husband of Cynthia Ellen (Pitts) Dean .

Hardy was the father of four Confederate soldiers: Aaron and Joseph were both killed in Franklin, Tennessee during the strife against Union forces (1864).

William and Thomas J. were both captured on November 30th of the same year, but were released a short while later, upon promising not to participate in any additional fighting against Union troops.
