In 1848, they journeyed across the plains to Salt Lake Utah, where they resided a few years, when they moved to Kansas in Aug. 1862. to settle on a claim in Netawaka, Jackson County, Kansas. He enlisted in the army at Fort Leavenworth serving in in Company B 11th Kansas Volunteer Calvary under the command of Ex Senator Preston B. Plumb. He saw service in the Price and Quantrill Raids. At the close of the war, he was transferred to Fort Laramie Wyoming to quiet the Indians. In 1871 he returned to Jewell county homesteading on a claim near Ionia, Kansas where he resided until his death.
On January 4, 1874 he was united in marriage to Gertrude (Gertie) Smith. To this union eight children were born. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Jeanette, and three daughters; Hattie Collie, Maude J. Vilott and Mary E. Vilott. He is survived by his wife, his only brother James, three sons; Walter James, Elmer Oscar and William Robert and two daughters Mrs. Dollie Dorst and Mrs. Pearl Cambridge.
He was a member of the Christian Bible School in Jewell.
