Martin Benedik was born November 1, 1875 to Ján and Anna Benedik, in Vnorovy which is in the state of Jihomoravsky, Czech Republic. He married Apolena Tomacek about 1899 in Vnorovy.

Martin first immigrated to America in February 1905 arriving in Baltimore. He stated he was visiting his brother, Fabian, in Pittsburgh.

Martin's and Fabian's wives (both named Apolonia) visited them in 1906, arriving together in New York on April 20, 1906, on the ship Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Both of these families went back to Vnorovy, Cz, at some point because they are found returning to America a few years later.

In 1912, Martin accompanied his sister, Kristina Bilek, and her children arriving in New York on March 16. His family followed the next year arriving in New York on April 15, 1913.

At some point, Martin began spelling his last name "Benedict." The 1920 census shows them living in Freedom, Wood County, Ohio. Martin is 45, Apolonia ("Opobona") is 46 and they have seven children living at home ranging in ages from 20 to 1: Frances, Charles, Frank, Martin, Anna, John and Steven. Of these children, only John and Steven were born in Ohio. By 1930, they are living in Portage, Hancock, Ohio, and only John and Steven are still living at home.

Apolonia died on March 3, 1940 in North Baltimore, Wood County, Ohio. The census taken the following month shows Martin living in North Baltimore with his sons, John and Steve, as well as John's wife and 6-month old son, "Johnie."

Martin died October 27, 1942 in McComb, Ohio. He was still living in North Baltimore and the record indicates he was a pool room proprietor. He and Apolonia are both buried in the New Maplewood Cemetery in Baltimore, Ohio.

At least two of Martin's siblings also immigrated to America: Fabian Benedik and Kristina Benedik Pavka.
