Baptism recorded 12 October 1796 at Evangelical Church of Frille in the County of Schaumburg-Lippe for Johann Heinrich Bals. Parents were Johann Christian Friedrich Bals and Anne Catharine Ilse Margarethe Volckening. He married Sophie Caroline Möller at Frille in 1827. His obituary in the St. John's UCC (Cumberland, Indiana) church-book states his wife and 3 daughters preceded him in death, and he has 2 sons and 1 daughter surviving (Charles HG Bals, Christian Bals, and Sophie (Bals) Muessing (buried in Cumberland). One brother, Anon Friedrich Bals, is buried in Lafayette, Indiana. A sister, Christine Louise Bals, married Conrad Witte and settled in Texas. Burial location for wife Sophie is unknown. Daughter Sophie Eleonore (Bals) Schmidt is also buried in Cumberland.
