Jay was born in Hartley County as the hospital in Dalhart is located in Hartley County.

Per cousin, John D. Root: Jay was a very special man, He loved his music, horses and most of all his family. There wasn't anything Jay couldn't do when he put his mind to it and most of all Jay was the easiest going dreamer a person could ever meet.

Jay recorded his songs on cassette and the only place that the tape could be purchased was at Texas Red's at Red River, New Mexico.

Jay was killed in Kansas when a horse he was riding fell down on him.

The song by Michael Martin Murphy titled "Long and Lonesome Road to Dalhart" was written about Jay and Mr. Murphy's attendance at Jay's funeral as they were personal friends.
