One of twelve children, she was a daughter of Nicholas and Anna (Sandt) Samuels, both of whom immigrated to Wisconson from Luxembourg as children. Barbara married Samuel M. Cunningham, a widower with one child, on March 14, 1900 at Council Grove; they lived at Herington before settling in Solomon, where they raised Sam's daughter and their own five children.
