David was born in Skelton Township, Carlton County, to John and Hattie (Manitzki) Coppernoll. He graduated from Barnum High School in 1951. He joined the Navy and spent about two weeks at Great Lakes, Illinois, but received a medical discharge because of a bone disease in his leg, due to an injury he had suffered as a child. He married Lois Mae Boehner December 13, 1952; they later divorced. He married Wanda Wetzstein August 26, 1978, in Anoka.

He was employed by the Soo Line Railroad, Minneapolis, for 26 years, first as a waybill clerk and later becoming a computer programmer. He designed, wrote, and maintained the payroll system for the company, then accepted a position as a computer programer/analyst for the Utah Department of Motor Vehicles in Salt Lake City. Dave retired from that position in 1988 and returned to Minnesota.

He was employed as a blackjack dealer at Grand Casino Mille Lacs until his official retirement. He was then employed as a part-time court bailiff at the Mille Lacs County Courthouse in Milaca.

After their return to Minnesota, Dave and Wanda built a new home in Dailey Township, Mille Lacs County, where their cabin in the woods once stood. It had burned in the 1980s while they lived in Utah, suspected arson.

Dave loved the woods and genuinely enjoyed the serenity of the woods. He enjoyed working with wood and used oak from the property for a staircase and other trim in the house.

In winter, Dave enjoyed reading or watching television while a fire glowed in the woodburning stove. News magazines or news broadcasts, particularly on CNN, were his favorites. He had a keen interest in world affairs, and politics in general.

In his retirement, Dave took on cooking, first using "boxed" entree items, but later starting from scratch.

He was preceded in death by his parents and half brother, Darold Coppernoll.
