John Coppernoll was born December 27, 1894 in Scott, Crawford, Wisconsin, and died April 22, 1977 in Moose Lake, Carlton, Minnesota. He married (1) Inez Marie (Mae) Dyer in 1915. He married (2) Henreitta Bridget (Hattie) Manitzki June 14, 1924 in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois.

He used his mother's maiden name, Flynn, when he and Hattie were married, purportedly because his previous marriage had not been legally terminated. According to stories, John left his first wife, Inez (Dyer) Coppernoll, and roamed the country, riding railroad boxcars to Michigan and on to New York state. Inez eventually had him declared dead so she could remarry. She married Penroy N. Sundt and lived in Madison, Wisconsin.

After their marriage, John and Hattie lived in Kansas City, Kansas, where John worked in a laundry. They later drove to Seattle, Washington, where they lived for a time before buying farmland in Carlton County, Minnesota, where their only son, David, was born and raised.
