"John was second son of William Strange and Mary White. He obtained a good education in private schooling. Reaching manhood he lived with his grandfather Seth Strange as overseer of his farm. When the War Between the States came he volunteered from Banks Co GA and engaged in many battles, serving with Lee's Army of VA throughout the war. He always felt his life was spared in answer to his sainted mother's prayers even when captured Apr 6 1865 at Farmville VA remaining a prisoner until June 19. Then returning home he found poverty, distress and his parents old and unwell and grieving over the loss of sons James and William and daughter Mary's husband John Wilmot. With his grandfather deeding the homeplace to his father's children, now John fell heir to the property as 2nd son. Together with sister Mary and two slave girls they worked hard and using good management John became one of the leading farmers of the county, owning 800 acres of land, mills, cotton gins and ample farm equipment upon his death."
