James Walter Pogue was born 19 February 1870 to Andrew Jackson Pogue (who settled in Clay County after the Civil War) and Sarah Ann Campbell, daughter of John M. Campbell and Mary Mitchum. In 1893, he married Lemma Owen (daughter of Newton Franklin Owen and Emily Elvira Barnes) and settled on a farm in the Hatchet Creek area. Although farming was hard work, they loved the beautiful countryside where wild flowers grew abundantly and branches of clear cool water flowed freely. They had nine children, all born on this lovely farm in Clay County.

1. Susan Soleta born 1894, died 1986, Tallapoosa County, Alabama. She married Calhoun Baucum in 1910. They were the parents of two children .

2. Vera Marie born 1896, died 1972, Talladega County, Alabama. She married Otis Parsons in 1912.

3. Sally Evelena born 1899, died 1987 Jefferson County, Alabama. She married Terry Chester Chappell in 1918. They had eleven children .

8. Ida Pearl born 1914, died 1996, Chambers County , Alabama. She married William Bartow Staples in 1930. They had 5 children.

9. Emily Juanita born 1920, died 2013. She married first Malcolm Ford Beverly in 1937. They had two children. After the death in 1962 of Malcolm, she married second Millard Don Sims.

James Walter Pogue was a very thrifty man and managed to take care of his family and provide a few extras. They rode to Hatchet Creek Baptist Church in a Surrey (with fringe on the top).

As the children began to marry and leave home, Lemma, became dissatisfied with the lonely country life. So, in 1930, they sold their 200 acres of beautiful land and bought property in Talladega, Alabama.

Lemma died in 1936 after a battle with cancer. James died in 1959. They both are buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Talladega, Talladega, Alabama.
