Continental Congressman. He moved to Granville (now Vance) County, North Carolina in 1775 and owned and operated a plantation he called Montpelier. Burton served as a Quartermaster in the Revolutionary War with the rank of colonel. He served on the Governor's Council from 1783 to 1784. In 1787 he served as a member of the Continental Congress. After the Revolution Burton withdrew from public life and continued operation of Montpelier. In 1801 he served as a member of the commission that established the boundaries between North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Burton was the uncle of Congressman and Governor Hutchins Gordon Burton.
