Haumpy Rites At Saddle Mountain
Final rites were at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Saddle Mountain Baptist church for
Haumpy, well known Kiowa Indian, who died at 9 a.m. Monday in the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Cecil Horse, south of Carnegie. He was 84 years old and had been
ill about three years.
Haumpy's allotment was half a mile east of town where he has lived more than
40 years. At one time he worked for the government as a peace officer.
Haumpy was a son of the famous Kiowa war chief, Black Bear.
Rev. Sherman Chaddleston conducted the services and was assisted by Haumpy's
son-in-law, Rev. Cecil Horse. Burial was in the Saddle Mountain Cemetery.
Survivors are his daughter, Mrs. Horse; a son, James Haumpy, Carnegie, and two
sisters, Mrs. Alice Black Bear, Hog Creek, and Toom-dah, Apache. twelve
grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren also survive.
