Jerome "Butch" F. Wendling, age 82, of Kiel, died at his home on Monday, July 12, 2010.
He was born October 29, 1927 in Kiel, son of the late Rudolph and Elsie (Kautzer) Wendling.
Butch attended SS Peter & Paul Grade School and was a 1946 graduate of Kiel High School.
He entered the U.S. Army on May 11, 1948 and was discharged as Sergeant First Class on May 14, 1952. He was in the 533d Military Intelligence Service Battalion, stationed in Linz, Austria. Butch attended school in Darmstadt, Germany from August 1949-October 1949 studying the German language, as well as the Administration School from January 1950-February 1950. He was very proud to serve his country.
On May 9, 1953 he married Janet Ann Flick at the SS Peter & Paul Rectory with Rev. F.X. Kheil officiating.
After high school, he was employed at the Kiel Woodenware and AA Laun Furniture Co. in Kiel. He retired from Stoelting Inc., Kiel on January 2, 1990.
He was a member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Kiel and a former member of the Kiel Fire Department. He also was a member of local bowling leagues, Kiel Kiwanis Club, Rockea Hunting Club, and the Kiel Fish and Game.
Butch enjoyed pheasant and deer hunting with his brother Glenroy and his nephews. He also enjoyed playing cards, doing Circle-a-Word puzzles and watching sports on TV.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Janet of Kiel; his daughter, Patricia Ann Stephani and special friend, Andy Kugel of Shawano; one grandson, Jacob Stephani and special friend, Michaela Elliot of Green Bay. He is further survived by one brother, Rudolph (Barbara) Wendling of Kiel; seven sisters, Marie Kienbaum, Sylvia Anhalt, Barbara (John) Schwind, Delores (Anthony) Kauth, all of Kiel, Diane (Thomas) Twohig of Fond du Lac, Nancy (Robert) Weir of El Paso, TX, Elsie Arnold of Kiel; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Leroy Breit of Kiel, Carmen (Raymond) Hainzlsperger of Unity, Ellen Remus of Athens, Wayne (Patricia) Flick of Horicon, Marie (Ardie) Peterson of Abbotsford, Charles (Gail) Flick of Colby, Priscilla Adams of Chester, VA, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his step-father, Elmer Dedering; one brother, Glenroy (Elaine) Wendling; two sisters, Jeannette (Jack) Graf, Georgiana Breit; brothers-in-law, Arno Kienbaum, Alfred Anhalt, Allan Arnold; step-brother, Robert Dedering; and step-sister, Lois Dedering..
The funeral Mass for Butch will be celebrated on Friday, July 16, 2010 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 413 Fremont St., Kiel with Rev. Loren Nys S.D.S. and Rev. Judine Duerwaechter officiating. Burial will take place in the Kiel City Cemetery.
