Lydia L. Wieting

Lydia L. Wieting, aged 97, a former Kiel resident, died Thursday afternoon, July 27, at Calumet Homestead, New Holstein, where she had been a resident for the past 10 years. The former Lydia Wieting was born February 5, 1892, at Brillion, daughter of the late Fred and Mary Schilling Wieting. She attended the former Woodland Park Elementary School, Kiel High School and the Oshkosh State Normal School where she received her teacher's certificate. April 3, 1913, she was married to Irvin F. Wieting at Bethel Methodist Church, rural New Holstein.
She was employed part-time at the former Gessert's drug store, gift shop and restaurant in Elkhart Lake for several years. For 18 years she was a Kiel news correspondent for the Sheboygan Press, Manitowoc Herald Times and the New Holstein Reporter. After their marriage the couple operated farms in the surrounding Kiel area. They retired and moved to Kiel in 1943. Her husband preceded her in death Sept. 1947.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Kiel; a former member of the Presbyterian Women's Association; a chairperson of Ruth's Circle; foreign missionary secretary; and a member of the American Red Cross Association, Manitowoc County Homemaker Association, the General Arts Homemakers Club and the Kiel Garden Club.
Survivors include one son, Elmer (Betsy), Indianapolis, Indiana; three daughters, Esther (Roland) Burgdorf of Kiel; Ruth Schlichting of Juneau; William (Alice) Eimermann of Sheboygan; 13 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and five step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Funeral services were Tuesday at Meiselwitz Funeral home, Kiel with Rev. Barbara Horner-Ible pastor, officiating. Burial was in Kiel Cemetery.
