FRIEDRICH ADOLPH CONRAD MESCH 1907

On Saturday morning, another of our long time and well respected German pioneer citizens of our area has died. After a long illness, Mr. Friedrich Adolph Conrad Mesch died at the age of 64 ½ years from Bright's disease.
The deceased, who had both a good and hardworking character and was well known and loved in the whole area, first saw the light of the world in Hohenhausen, Principality of Lippe-Detmold, Germany on August 11, 1842 and came to America in 1866, first to Wheeling, West Virginia and then came to Wisconsin and settled in Town Herman. On April 1, 1872 he married Wilhelmine Uphoff of Town Herman who died on March 5, 1901. Later he married again with Mrs. H. Soemmer who now survived him.
In 1873 he came to Kiel and for many years ran a successful store and in 1884 he went into partnership with Mr. Friedrich Duecker to establish and cheese box factory which was taken over by the Kiel Woodenware Company in 1888. Three years ago, he left the active life and moved to Manitowoc for his health, where he has now died.
Mr. Mesch contributed a great deal to the development of Kiel, and the village has lost one of its finest citizens and the news of his death has brought great sorrow.
Besides his second wife, he is survived by four daughters and two sons, one grandchild and one sister, additionally a nephew, Adolph Zimmermann and a niece Mrs. Carl Meiselwitz, who he took in after their parents died, and who they considered as their beloved father.
The burial took place on Tuesday afternoon with numerous mourners from far and near. Pastor Rech officiated at the house, pastor Roeck at the church, and Pastor Grether at the grave. The student choir from the Mission House and the choir from the Reformed Church sang appropriate songs. The earthy remains were buried beside his first wife at the Kiel Cemetery.

Adolph Mesch died at Manitowoc Saturday last at the age of 65 years, after long years of suffering from asthma. The deceased was a native of Germany and came to this country in 1866 and located at Franklin, Sheboygan County, where he worked for some time as a miller for C. F. Arpke. In 1872 he located at Kiel and engaged in the general mercantile business. He was one of the prime movers in organizing and establishing the Kiel Wooden ware plant and took an active part in the business until some three years ago, when he moved to Manitowoc on account of failing health. The remains were taken to Kiel and the funeral held Tuesday. Rev. and Mrs. W. A. Arpke of this city were in attendance. Mr. Mesch was an uncle of Mr. Arpke. A widow, two sons and four daughters survive him.
