Father of 12 children, 8 of whom survived him: Albert O., J. Alfred, Lawrence C., and Robert L. Levert, and Mrs. Felix A. Larue, Mrs. F.J. Kearny, Mrs. John Allen Swanson, and Mrs. J.M. Gore.
Enlisted in the First Louisiana Cavalry as a Lieutenant and later was on the staff of General Proctor Smith. Captured at Dix River, KY and held prisoner until the end of the war.
The title of General was bestowed upon him in 1903 by comrades of the Louisiana Division, United Confederate Veterans, when they made him major-general of the division.
Founder of the Louisiana Sugar Exchange and served as its president.
Member of the board of administrators of Tulane University for over 50 years; served as one of the curators of the state museum; and served in the state Senate. Director of the Canal Bank and Trust Co. until his death.
