Obituary: Bertha Swenson, 88, of Shelly died Thursday at St. Angsar Hospital in Moorhead (MN). Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Shelly-Marsh River Lutheran Church in Shelly (MN). A family service will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Fredrickson Funeral Home in Ada. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and for an hour before the services on Monday at the church.

Bertha Efteland was born October 25, 1895, near Shelly (MN). She attended school in Shelly and business college in Fargo, N.D. She married Emil Swenson on January 3, 1918 in Shelly. He died in 1947.

Survivors include four sons: Selmer of Redondo Beach, Calif., Tilfred and Alert, both of Shelly, and Tony of Minneapolis; five daughters, Anna Morehart of Shelly, Olga Meyer of Moorhead, Selma Larson of Hendrum, Alice Brenden of Hillsboro, N.D. and Ludella Doerfler of Mahnomen; 27 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Bertha Katherine Efteland was born October 25, 1894, near Shelly, Minnesota to Tonnes and Ingeborg Gronning Efteland. She attended school in Shelly and also business college in Fargo, North Dakota. On January 3, 1918, she married Emil Swenson in Shelly and they farmed near there until his death on January 15, 1947. Bertha continued to live on the farm and help until her death. She was baptized and confirmed in Zion Lutheran Church at rural Shelly and was a member of the Shelly-Marsh River Lutheran Church in Shelly. She had been both treasurer and superintendent of the Sunday School, a member of the ALCW and Mission Society, and the education group.

Funeral Services: Monday, March 13, 1984, in the Shelly-Marsh River Lutheran Church. Burial: in the spring in the Shelly Lutheran Cemetery. Officiant: Rev. Kristen Kvamme. Organist: Mrs. Kristen Kvamme; soloist - Cecil Malme, "Den Store Hvide Flok," and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus,"; Congregation - No. 474 "Children Of The Heavenly Father" and No. 352 "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Pallbearers: Mrs. Swenson's grandsons.
