Tony E. Swenson

Tony E. Swenson, 89, Anoka, MN, formerly of Shelly, MN, died Monday, July 24, 2017, at Walker Methodist Plaza, under the care of hospice in Anoka, MN.

Tony was born on November 19, 1927, in Shelly, as one of 11 children to Emil and Bertha (Efteland) Swenson. He was baptized and confirmed in Shelly and attended Shelly Public School. After completing his schooling, he worked for the Efteland Farms for a couple of years before he joined the United States Army. He served during World War II and received the Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal before he was honorably discharged in March of 1947.

Tony worked as a carpenter mostly in residential housing and was known for his finishing skills. He had a keen eye for measurements and dimensions and always preferred Oak lumber. He was united in marriage to Arlene Rochester on May 13, 1961, in Illinois. They made their home mostly in the Twin Cities and Tony was a 35 year member of the Carpenter Local Union #1644. He retired in 1989.

Tony is survived by his wife, Arlene, two daughters, Sharon (David) Hollinrake, Brooklyn Park, MN and Nancy (Tom) DeValk, Elk River, MN, and one son Paul (Sandy) Swenson, Savage, MN, 8 grandchildren, Nicole (Dan) Baruth, Darren (Ruby) Hollinrake, Jeremy Swenson, Jason Hollinrake, Aaron Swenson, Brittany DeValk, Brianna DeValk, and Brandon DeValk, two great grandchildren, Leo and Camille, four sisters, Olga Meyer-Gregor, Dilworth, MN, Selma Larson, Hendrum, MN, Alice Brenden, Dilworth, MN, Lucella Doerfler, Mahnomen, MN, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Selmer, Tilfred, Alert, and Martin, and two sisters, Ida DeYoung and Anna Morehart, and one step son, James Schiller.

Funeral: 11:00AM Saturday, July 29, 2017, at Shelly Marsh River Lutheran Church, Shelly, MN.

Visitation: From 5:00PM to 7:00PM with a 6:30PM prayer service on Friday, July 28, 2017, at Fredrikson-Ganje Funeral Home, Halstad.

Burial: Shelly Cemetery, rural Shelly, MN.
