Ida Mary Spencer (Mrs. Ida Alden) was born in Waterloo Iowa, February 5, 1867. Her mother, Eliza M. DuBois, was born in New York and her father, Franklin Spencer was born in Three Rivers, Michigan.

She lived in her early days in Kansas and later in Missouri.

At the age of 15 she came with her parents to Dakota territory, returning later to Waterloo, where she finished her education. She returned to Dakota territory in 1885.

In 1886 she was married to Everard F. Alden. Four children were born to them, Everard R., Mary Adeline, Arthur Freeman and Jack.

When the West River country was opened up, Mr. Alden came west in 1908 but Mrs. Alden remained in Faulk county to finish her second term as county superintendent of schools.

Mrs. Alden taught school for 48 years -- 24 years in Faulk county and 24 years in Perkins county.

She was preceeded in death by her son, Arthur Freeman, in 1926 and by her husband in 1944.

She passed away at her home in Faith on July 11 and was buried in the family lot beside her husband July 15, 1950.

She was a member of the Methodist church and also a member in good standing at the time of her death in the Rainbow branch Rebekah Lodge 162 of Faith, S.D.

She is survived by two sons, Everard R., and Jack, both of Faith, one daughter, Adeline Rockefellow, of Rapid City: two sisters, Josephine Brewer of Dell Rapids and Georgia Coleman of Silverton, Oregon.

She had 16 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and many relatives and friends.
