Moses was the son of Moses Alexander Sr., who founded Alexander and Sons, Inc. The company was a continuation of the undertaking business that had been operating since 1843. After graduation from Soldan High School in St. Louis, Missouri, Moses went to Rubicam Business School and the American School of Embalming. He joined the family firm after graduation and became president in 1939.

Always progressive, the firm is said to have been the first in St. Louis to adopt completely motorized equipment for funeral services in 1911.

During World War I, Moses served as a private first class in the tank corps of the army. A member of the American Legion, he was also active in the West Presbyterian Church. Interested in Masonic work, he as a past mater of Tuscan Lodge #360, a past patron of Tuscan Chapter #68, Order of the Eastern Star, a 32nd degree Mason, Knight Commander of the Court of Honour, member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, a member of the Alhambra Grotto, Moolah Temple, the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine and the Caledonian Club.

Active in baseball and football during his high school years, he was one of the founders of the St. Louis Skeet and Trap Club. He also bred and trained Irish setters as a hobby.
