BURTON ALEXANDER SR.

Burton Francis Alexander Sr., 88, of Petersburg, passed away Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Southside Regional Medical Center.

A native of New York City, he was the son of the late Michael Rose and Florence Hanover Alexander. He served in the U.S. Navy for 27 years including service in Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Prior to his service in the Navy, he was a teacher in the Augusta County School System. He continued teaching, following his military career, in the Petersburg School System and as an extension instructor for the University of Virginia and the College of William and Mary. Mr. Alexander was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Coiner Alexander; and his son, James F. Alexander.

He is survived by two sons, Burton F. Alexander Jr. of New Kent and Peter L. Alexander of California; and three grandchildren, Pamela Varnier of Wicomico, Va., Mary Frances Pair of Quinton, Va., and Dr. Burton F. Alexander III of Virginia Beach.

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at Southlawn Memorial Park, with the Rev. Rick Allison, pastor of Walnut Hill Baptist Church, officiating.

The remains rest at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
