Mr. Valentine Arndt, one of Alva's most highly respected citizens, died at his home on east Santa Fe Street Sunday morning, April 20, 1919, after a long illness.
Mr. Arndt was born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, October 20, 1837. On March 6, 1862, he married Miss Permelia Charles, at Liverpool, Pa. On Sept. 7 1864 he enlisted in Co. G, 208th Pa. Inf., at Harrisburg. His regiment was engaged in several actions between the James and Appomattox Rivers, among them being Ft. Steadman, Hatcher's Run, and Petersburg. He was stationed only nine miles from Appomattox at the time of the surrender. He was mustered out with his regiment May 9, 1865, at Alexandria, Va.
Mr. Arndt moved with his family in 1893 from Pennsylvania to Nebraska and in 1894 came to Woods County and settled on a claim northwest of Alva. Some years ago Mr. and Mrs. Arndt moved to Alva and have spent most of their time here since then. He was a member of Alva Post
G.A.R., was genial and companionable and a man of the highest integrity. He told the writer, five years ago, that he had raised two girls and four boys, that he had 27 grand children and had never lost a child or grandchild. [error]
Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon at 2:30 under the auspices of the G.A.R., Rev. Mr. Freeman of the U.B. church preached the funeral sermon. Twenty-eight Civil War veterans were present at the services. The remains were then laid to rest in the A.O.U.W. cemetery.
