SECOND CHILD of Johann Christoph Bierbaum and Florentine (Johanningmeier) Bierbaum, Anna Catharina Bierbaum, who died at eighteen days in 1860, is their only child buried near Pioneer Rock Church at Ceres in Clayton County, Iowa. Seven of her brothers and sisters also died in infancy and are in Garnavillo Cemetery at Garnavillo, also in Clayton County. Near Anna is her cousin, Maria Elisabeth Bierbaum--daughter of Gerhard and Caroline (Walke) Bierbaum. Baby Maria was born in 1858 and died in 1859. Maria's parents, Gerhard and Caroline Bierbaum, are buried at Ceres, too.

Pioneer Rock Church was originally founded in 1858 as St. Peter's German United Evangelical Lutheran Church. Among its first members was Clayton County, Iowa pioneer Gerhard Bierbaum referred to in the foregoing paragraph. It was from Bierbaum's quarry that rock was obtained to build the picturesque church that did appropriately then become known as "Pioneer Rock Church." It is also known as Ceres Church and Cemetery.
