Lawrence Barnes, son of Percival Eugene & Emma Velma Longstreet Barnes. Brother of Harold, Norma, Irma, Darrel, Jean, Ray, Roy, Bertha & Percy.

He grew up on the family farm in Manton, Wexford County, Michigan. During WWII, he left school and joined the Navy.

Lawrence served in the US Navy during WWII. He was at the Invasion of Normandy, During his time in Europe, he shot down a plane that was attempting to damage or sink the ship he was on.

Following his time in the service. He went to Muskegon to work and it was there that he met Gertrude, at a roller skating rink. He stayed with a cousin Floyd Daley.

He married Gertrude Panzl at the priest's house. They purchased a farm in Conklin, it was there that they raised 6 of their 7 children. They started their family with the birth of their daughter Barbara. She was followed by Louise, Larry (Lawrence) Jr., James, Beverly, Cathy (Catherine) and Phillip . Phillip was stillborn.

Lawrence enjoyed hunting and usually got his deer. He shot a 6 point just 10 days before he passed away.

Lawrence worked at a factory driving fork lift trucks. He retired in 1984 and enjoyed his retirement. He had a regular routine of having coffee and bowling.

Lawrence died on the evening on November 25, 1987 at home, from a massive heart attack.

During the times of visitation and at his funeral, there were so many people that turned out to pay their respects. He was a very well know man in the community. Lawrence was very proud of his family and rightfully so.

Mr Lawrence Barnes age 65, passed away Wednesday evening. He is survived by his wife Gertrude. two sons Larry ( Jeanne ) of Wayland and Jim ( Kathy) of Six Lakes. four daughters. Mrs Barbara ( Norm) Rohen of Coopersville, Ms. Louise Barnes of Grand Rapids, Mrs Beverly ( Tom) Reimer of Muskegon and Mrs Cathy ( David ) Ryan of California. Ten grandchildren, two brothers, Darrel of North Muskegon and Percy of Fife Lake. Four sisters, Mrs Jason ( Norma) Lickley of Imlay City, Mrs Vernon ( Lois) Goodwin of Clio, Mrs Howard (Irma) Warden of Fairborn Ohio,and Mrs Carl ( Bertha) Vincent of California.

The funeral services for Mr. Barnes will be held 1:30 O'clock Saturday at the Throop Funeral Home, Ravenna, Father Bill Langlois officiating. Burial in St. Catherine's Cemetery Ravenna.
