When Hertha Amanda Knackstedt was born on January 28, 1904, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, her father, Johann "Gus" Wilhelm August Knackstedt, was 41 and her mother, Emma Margaretha "Behrmann" Knackstedt, was 33.

She was employed by Simon's family of Minden. Also worked in Rock Rapids area lived with Emil and Marie Lange between 1921 and 1923. (Marie Johanna "Behrmann" Lange was her sister)

She was united in marriage to Ernest Henry Boege on November 27, 1923 in Council Bluffs, Iowa and together they engaged in farming.

She had six children by the time she was 26, Lawrence Vern, Minnie Mildred, Dorthy Elizabeth, Ernest Henry, Grace Irene and Helen Hertha.

She died on September 18, 1954, in Oakland, Iowa, at the age of 50, and was buried there.
