He was employed initially as a secretary in The Texas Pipeline Company's legal department while putting himself through law school. The last 18 years prior to retirement he was a title analyst with Sunoco retiring at 59 years of age. A member of Phi Beta Gamma legal fraternity, he was an avid reader, and prolific writer especially of Letters to the Editor on national and community issues of great concern to him. Mr. Whaley was an active member of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, Tulsa, where he taught an adult Sunday School class. In 1987 he and his wife, Kathryn, purchased Cloverleaf Farm near Hannibal, Missouri, which had been in the Whaley family since 1882 and was designated a Missouri Century Farm in 1988. For many years he was instrumental in spearheading R.A.W. Ralls (County) Against Waste, which eventually won a legal battle against Browning Ferris Industries which had planned to build a landfill adjacent to the village of Renssalaer near the family farm.
