Deceased Name: W. Irene Boling 104, of Hannibal
W. Irene Boling, 104, of Hannibal, died at 11:30 a.m.

Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at Luther Manor. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at the First Christian Church, 1101 Broadway, Hannibal, where Mrs. Boling was Elder Emeritus. The Rev. Steve Barker will officiate.

Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service, and burial will be at Grand View Burial Park. Smith Funeral Home & Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Willie Irene was born in Spalding on April 21, 1906, to William Nichols Whaley and Carrie Fitchen Whaley. She grew up on the family farm with two sisters, Leona and Catherine, and two brothers, Harold and Paul. She attended Spalding School and graduated from Rennselaer High School where she wrote for the school newspaper and enjoyed her roles in school plays and musical productions.

She loved to sing.

On June 23, 1928, Irene married William Harold (Bill) Boling in Hannibal.

Their first child, Virginia Carolyn, was born in July, 1929; and three sons soon came along, William Harold (Bill) Jr. in October, 1930; Donald Lee in August, 1934; and James Thomas in November, 1939.

Irene and Bill joined the First Christian Church in Hannibal in April, 1931, and Irene immediately became involved in church activities.

She was a charter member of the Queen Austin Sunday School Class, founded in 1931 as the Young Mothers Class.

Later she was active in the Christian Women's Fellowship and also served as a deacon and an elder. Her strong Christian faith was the cornerstone of her long life.

The Bolings raised their family through the difficult days of the Depression but felt blessed that Mr. Boling always had work as a mechanic. Bill and Irene moved their family to St.

Louis in 1943 when Bill was enlisted for defense work on diesel engines during World War II. Irene worked part-time at Famous Barr in those days to supplement the family income.

They returned to Hannibal and in 1945 purchased the farm on Highway 61 that Irene just left two years ago when she moved to Luther Manor. Their farm home was always full of laughter, the site of wedding and anniversary celebrations, birthday parties, holiday gatherings, picnics, hunting parties and family reunions; and Bill and Irene were happiest when hosting their family and many friends.

Irene worked hard on their farm alongside her husband while raising four children, but she inherited her mother's joy for cooking and was most at home in the kitchen. She was a longtime member of the Ralls County Extension Homemakers' Council and served in every office. In 1985, the Ralls County chapter won first place in the state for membership while Irene was membership chairman.

She also was a member of the Ocean Wave extension club and volunteered as a Gray Lady at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. In 1977 she was initiated to the New London Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Besides her volunteer duties, Irene worked at Keeling's women's clothing store in downtown Hannibal in the 1950s and 60s.

The legacy of Irene Boling is one of love and laughter, faith and affection.

She lived her life with a sense of humor, devotion to family, and faith not only in God but in people. She was a light in so many lives throughout her 104 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband and three children, Virginia Donelson, Bill Boling Jr. and Jim Boling; by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Leona and Bob Keyes, and Catherine and B.B. Rekus; and by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Kathryn Whaley, and Paul and Fannie Whaley. Her mother, Carrie Whaley, died at Luther Manor in 1984 at age 105.

She is survived by one son, Don, and his wife Jean Boling of Warrenton; one son-in-law, Bill Donelson of St. Louis; and one daughter-in-law, Barbara (Mrs.

James) Boling of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Barbara (Dr. John) Hoelscher of Alton, Ill., Kiki (Dr. David) Osterman of Sherman, Texas, Judi (Clif) Derks of Lenexa, Kan., Greg (Traci) Boling of Marthasville, Pattie (Lewis) Lavy of Troy, Jennifer Holt of Columbia and Kristan Boling of Indianapolis, Ind.

Pallbearers will be Keith Boling, Clif Derks, Jack Hoelscher, John Hoelscher and Ted Broemmer.

Honorary pallbearers are Russell Alexander, Dick Boling, John Briscoe, Bill Craigmiles, Tom Marx, Bernard Rekus and Ben Swan.
