Ross E. Hockemeyer, 78, died at 9:01 p.m. July 4, 2009, at Lima Memorial Health System.

He was born Jan. 7, 1931, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Martin F. and Irma K. (Cornish) Hockemeyer, who preceded him in death. His companion, Cora "Corky" Slife, survives in Wapakoneta.

Mr. Hockemeyer retired in 1998 as a senior associate construction administrator from Fanning/Howe Associates, Celina. He was a member of Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks Lodge 54 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 370, both in Lima, and a social member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8445, Wapakoneta. He was a graduate of Northside High School, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Purdue University. He enjoyed spending time at his condo in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and playing euchre. He was affectionately known as "One-Trump Hockemeyer."

Survivors also include four children, Cheryl (James) Horstman, of Angola, Ind., Phillip Hockemeyer, and Steven (Gail) Hockemeyer, both of Indianapolis, and Todd (Katrina) Hockemeyer, of Fishers, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Cortney Horstman, Gilliane and Ryan Hockemeyer, Scott, Laura and Alexa Hockemeyer, and Kathryn, John and Ellen Hockemeyer; three great-grandchildren, Dominique Carrington and Jacob and Owen Hockemeyer; and a nephew, Jeffery (LeAnn) Perry, of Albion, Ind. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert M. Hockemeyer.

Services will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at First English Lutheran Church, Wapakoneta. Pastor Steven Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne, Ind.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, Wapakoneta, and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First English Lutheran Church.
