John E. Bass, aged 49, a lifelong resident of Beloit, died in the Wisconsin General hospital in Madison early Saturday morning. He had been ill since last June and a goiter operation was performed Thursday morning in an effort that proved unavailing to save his life.
Mr. Bass was born in Beloit and was a farmer until about 12 years ago when he went into the carpenter-contractor business. He had done general contracting since that time. He was a member of the First Baptist church.
Mr. Bass is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alice Sims Bass 1113 St. Lawrence Avenue, to whom he was married 25 years ago; by 10 children, and a sister, Mrs. Peter Peterson, Beloit. The children are: Mrs. George Lancaster and Mrs. Vera Joy, both of Beloit; Victor Bass, Indianapolis; and seven younger children living at home, John, Alice, Clyde, Lyle, Lillian, George and Audrey. Another son died in infancy.
Funeral services will be held in the Rosman-Kinzer chapel Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. R. N. McDonald will conduct the service. Burial will be in Eastlawn cemetery.
