Named Hayward after his paternal grandfather, and Kim after a young Asian Ophthalmologist who saved the eyesight of his oldest sister. Affectionately known as "Wood", he was the 8th child of 10 children.

Hayward was born and raised in Washington, DC. In 1976, he graduated from Cardoza High School and later attended the Lincoln Technical Institute, earning a certificate in heat and air conditioning. His work experience included asbestos removal at various sites in the Washington Metropolitan area, heat & air conditioning services at the Pentagon, firework salesman, and owner/operator of a used car business.

Hayward enriched the lives of his family, friends, co-workers, and others by his caring personality and loving concern. He loved his family more than anything - for him family didn't included just blood relatives but also many friends and their children and his children's friends as well. He was an outgoing, one of a kind people person who enjoyed camping, fishing, ice skating, swimming, skiing, bowling and horseback riding. He also loved to play practical jokes on loved ones.

Hayward was murdered during a robbery at his used car business in Marlow Heights, MD; he was 45 years old.

Services held on July 10, 2002 at Brown Memorial AME Church in Washington, DC.

On September 21, 2017, another link in the family chain entered eternal rest, his sister Gail's Partner in life, Thomas Anthony Vaughn.
