Cathy Ann Akers was born July 16, 1951 in Annapolis, Maryland to the late William and Frances Akers. She was the fourth of ten children.
Cathy and her family moved to Washington, DC in 1955. “Kathy”, as she was called by her family, had a memorable childhood growing up in a close-knit family in the Benning Road and East Capital Street neighborhoods of the city. During her adolescent and teen years she attended Davis Elementary school, Kelly Miller Junior High and Spingarn Senior High; accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior; and was a member of the Girl Scouts of America.
She possessed a contagious smile and an entertaining sense of humor. Throughout her life she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many, who even now are being changed by her witness of constant nurturing love. Her signature gift of joy, shown through her constant smiling, laughter, and joking around, will never be forgotten.
After high school, she later worked for Red Top Cab of Fairfax, VA as a clerk and dispatcher; and at Tri-Continental in Washington, DC as an office assistant. She also volunteered her time performing clerical tasks at various nonprofit organizations.
With a real zest for life, Cathy enjoyed traveling, knitting, cooking, and spending time with her grand and great-grand children. She loved spoiling them and telling them "war stories", as we jokingly referenced, about family history and past memories just to name a few. Cathy lived life her way but she loved her family and always made sure you knew it.
At Providence Hospital, after a brief illness, Cathy entered into eternal rest during the morning of December 29, 2014. In addition to her parents William and Frances Akers, her brothers Lawrence Michael Branch, Gregory Ortez and Hayward Kim Akers and nephews Gregory Ronnie Akers and Thomas Darnell Vaughn preceded her in death.
Cathy leaves behind daughters Tammy Meshelle Evans and Fran Náte Taylor; son-in-law Reginald Taylor; granddaughters Tiffany Donniesha Akers, Sasha Tanneka and Brittany Laray Evans; great grandchildren TyShawn Malachi Akers, Shania Najae Evans, Narihya Grace Oliver, Amiya Laray Evans, SaQuan Kareem Evans, Corday King, and Pablo Prince Greenfield; brothers and sisters William (Olivia), Gail (Thomas), Alan (Betty), Toni (Calvert), Jeffery, and Martha; nephews and nieces Michael Branch, Ontaria Luckie and Gregory Branch, Diane Richardson and Angelo Akers, Maurice Vaughn, Alan Akers and Marcia Gainey, Latania White, Sylvette and Richard Sawyers, Hayward McCalip, Kim Akers, and Fitzgerald Harris, Lawrence Meekins, and Amoni Akers; great nephews and nieces; first cousin Terry Henson; godson Roosevelt Jones; dear friends Anwar Abdul-Adl and Willie Evans; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services held January 12, 2015 at Brown Memorial AME Church in Washington, DC.

On September 21, 2017, another link in the family chain entered eternal rest, her sister Gail's Partner in life and devoted friend, Thomas Anthony Vaughn.
