Hans Henry Froendt, Sr. was born July 11, 1867 at Schleswig Holstein Germany and died at his home in Spirit Lake June 19, 1960.

He came to the United States in 1884 at the age of 17. He worked as a farm hand near Keystone, Iowa. He was naturalized an American citizen at Vinton, Iowa in 1888 at the age of 21.

On March 4, 1890, he was united in marriage to Dora M. Sanny at Lucerne, Iowa. To this union nine children were born, two of whom preceded him in death. Fred was killed in an automobile accident in 1945 and Caroline died in infancy. Mrs. Froendt passed away in 1944.

Mr. and Mrs. Froendt first lived in Keystone where he worked on the railroad and later farmed. In 1910, the couple moved to Dickinson County on a farm near Lake Park and later to a farm near Milford.

In 1912 he purchased a farm in Superior township where they resided until their retirement in 1941. At that time, they moved to Spirit Lake.

Survivors include; three sons, George of Arnolds Park, Hans Jr. of Spirit Lake and William of Milford; four daughters. Mrs. William (Ida) Gurtiz of Spirit Lake, Mrs. Walter (Agnes) McCullough of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Carl (Elsie) Grant of Des Moines and Mrs. Tracy ( Mary) Estes of Spirit Lake; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Harpole's Funeral Home in Spirit Lake, June 22, 1960, with Rev. B. J. Swede, pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiating. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery in Spirit Lake.

Special music was provided by Robert Kuyper and Rev. Swede. Pallbearers were Francis Hoovel, John Banning, Arnold Cartenson and Leonard Bergman.
