John was probably named after his grandfather David Brockman's youngest brother, John (1859-1863), who died from the measles and could have contributed to David later becoming a doctor.
John graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1938. He was working in the local bank and then also took over the management of the city's swimming pool when his father was told to take it easy by the doctor. He enlisted in the Army on October 13, 1942.
On January 2, 1943, in Ottumwa, Iowa he was married to Mary Rosalie Alsdorf, who was born on February 6, 1918 in Denison, Grayson Co, Texas to Frederick Louis and Katherine Marks Alsdorf.
John's mother died in February 1944 while he was overseas in England. On June 6, 1944 he participated in the D-Day landing on Utah Beach, Normandy, France. His group fought their way across France and into Belgium and Germany, participating in the Battle of the Bulge.
When he returned home in late 1945, John and Mary went to Fairfield, Iowa where John attended Parsons College, graduating in 1948. It was during this time that they lost their first son, David, in October 1946.
After graduation, John was working in banking, moving the family to various cities along the way in Iowa, Montana, Arizona, Minnesota and California.
John and Mary were separated in 1968 and subsequently divorced. He was remarried in 1981 to Nona Hallowell. He became a grandfather for the first time in 1973 and enjoyed the role immensely. At the time of his death in 1999, he had 3 living grandchildren and 1 great grandson. He had 2 grandchildren who preceded him death, Kyle Vaughn Brockman and Rachel Louisa Foran.
