Anna J Stahl was born September 1, 1911 on the family farm near Yale, South Dakota to Paul J and Anna J (Hofer) Stahl. She attended Yale High School for three years and graduated from Freeman High School.

On February 20, 1942, Anna married Herbert A. Mencke in Huron, South Dakota. They farmed south of Huron until 1946 when they moved seven miles north of Huron. On the farm, Anna raised chickens and sold eggs and dressed chickens to many regular customers in Huron.

After her husband's death in 1985, Anna brought a house in Huron. She enjoyed traveling, going by bus to Denver and California to visit her daughter. She also enjoyed scrabble, bingo, collecting postage stamps, and doing latchhook rugs. She was a loving, caring mother--always concerned and willing to help when needed.

From 2001 until the time of her death, Anna lived with her daughter and son-in-law and attended the Huron Adult Day Care Center when able.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1976; two sisters, Mary Stahl and Agnes (Stahl) Waldner; and two brothers, Jake and Joe Stahl.
