In '64 and '65 he was part of Sherman's forces engaged in the battles on the way to Atlanta, the battle for Atlanta and then on the March to the Sea and Savannah.

Upon his return to Monroe County, Kentucky he married Nancy J. Crews and started his family. He was a farmer until his death.

He was buried at the Gregory Cemetery in Monroe County. His wife Nancy and his parents were buried there also. Over the years the Gregory Cemetery fell into a sorry condition. Some of his children had moved to Springfield, Missouri and at sometime in the early 1970's, Benjamin's descendants went to the Gregory and removed the headstones for Benjamin, Nancy and his father Madison and set them in the Patterson Cemetery where they are today.
