He served in the South Pacific during World War II. Charles received the Asiastic-Pacific Theater Ribbons, both with two bronze stars, along with several other ribbons.
He lived in Barberton Ohio, for several years before moving to Denison, Texas. He was a gifted artist and wonderful musician, who loved playing at his second home, The SNAP Center, where he was awarded Outstanding Senior Citizen in July 2003.
