OBITUARY OF MRS. JOHN HUGHES.

Mrs. John Hughes, of Scotch Grove, was
token suddenly ill last Wednesday, with
apoplectic stroke causing continuous uncon-
sciousness until Friday afternoon when she
died. Everything was done that medical
skill and the constant efforts ol the family
and friends could do night and day, for her
recovery. Four years ago Mr. Hughes died
and she always seemed anxious to join him
in the better land. Her wish has been grant-
ed. Her large and loving family of four sons
and four daughters would gladly have had
her stay with them longer, and it seemed at
last as if she was more contented to stay
but her early wish was realized, and we have
no doubt that if.she had only been able to
been a great privilege.

Her family name was Selina James. She
was born near Lands End, Cornwall, Eng-
land, June 7, 1832, and died June 17, 1898, so
that she was 66 years and 10 days old when
she died. She came with her parents to
this country, when she was 22 years ofter
One year afterward she was married to John
Hughes at Council Hill, Jo Davis county,
Illinois. They moved to Scotch Grove in
1870. Nine children were born to them.
One died in infancy. The four sons and four
daughters have grown to manhood and
womanhood here, and were all at their
mother's bedside during her sickness. Her
sisters, Mesdamca Bard and Palmer of Cedar
Rapids, and Mr. and Mrs. J. B. and Mr. and
Mrs, Charles Moses, Mr, and Mrs. Waillace
of Cedar Rapids, Gideon and Ed. Hughes of
Scotch Grove, John N. and OIlie Hughes of
Cedar Rapids, and Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
Hughes of Marshaltown, Iowa, were also
present.

Mr. and Mrs. Hughes were members of
the church of England from their youth.
Twelve years ago Mrs. Hughes united with
the Scotch Grove Presbyterian church, of
which their family had become members.

Mrs. Hughes did not seem to suffer very
much during her sickness. We all cherish
her memory and remember with pleasure
her kindly ways with friends, neighbors
and children.

The funeral services were conducted by
Revs. John Rice, H. Robinson, J. M. Bol-
ton and L. A. Sutherland. Mr, Robinson
preached thc funeral sermon from John 14:1,
"Let not your heart be troubled, ye believer
in Godi believe also in me." The attendance
was very large, showing the universal re-
spect cherished by friends and neighbors
of thc family. Six sons and son-in-laws
were bearers on the occasion.
