Death of Mr. John Hughes.

The sad death of Mr. John Hughes
an old resident of Scotch Grove
which was occasioned by heart de-
ease occurred at his home September
6th 1894, after a lingering illness of
ten weeks. Death was not altogeth-
er unexpected as friends had but
little hope of his recovery from the
first.

Mr. Hughes was born in Engand
May 10th, 1823, and hence at the
time of his death was in his seventy
second year. He came to America in
1848, located at Galena where he
lived until 1860 when he moved to
Scotch Grove which has ever since
been his home.

He was a believer in the Christian re-
ligion, a regular attendant and sup-
porter of the church, and in early
youth was baptized and confirmed
in the Episcopal church of England.

He was married in 1850 to Selina
James whom together with four
sons and four daughters, all grown
to manhood and womanhood, he
leaves behind him to mourn his loss.
Mr. Hughes was a good citizen; a
loving linsband; a kind father; and a
true friend. His home was was his joy
his family his delight. He was ever
at home when business did not, call
him elsewhere, and self was wholly
forgotten in his generosity to his
wife and family.

Peace with all was his motto,
kindness to all his effort.

The funeral took place Saturday
the 8th, from the Presbyterian church,
the services being conducted by Rev.
John Rice who chose for his text the
beautiful appropriate words "I know
that my Redeemer livith." In the
presence of many sorrowing friends
the remains were laid to rest in the
Scotch Grove cemetery.
