Waymon Adcock, 95, joined our Heavenly Father, Thursday, January 29, 2015.

Services will be Sunday, February 1st at the Merkel Church of Christ with Lou David Allen and Larry Gill officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Waymon Roy Adcock was born in Merkel, Texas to Oscar J. and Cora (Bankhead) Adcock May 5, 1919. He was the youngest of four children. With the exception of four years of his life, he lived within two blocks of where he was born. He has been a member of the Merkel Church of Christ since 1930. In later years he served as a deacon.

He joined the Merkel Volunteer Fire Department in 1938 after graduating from Merkel High School. He became Fire Chief in 1954 and served in that position forty-eight years. His reasons for devoting so much of his life to the fire department were; "It gives you a chance to save lives and property and to serve your community. You get to enjoy it. It's something I really like to do. It gets in your blood."

Waymon's father bought a cleaning business for him and his brother, Oscar Jr. Waymon took over in 1940.

He married his high school sweetheart, Johnnie Chadwick, of Noodle on Easter Sunday, March 24, 1940. He and Johnnie ran the business with the exception of four years from 1942-46, when Waymon was first in the Navy during World War II and then a resident of Fort Worth. When wash & wear fabrics detracted from the dry cleaners in 1968, Waymon and Johnnie opened Circle A Western House. They built a store in Merkel and opened a branch in West Gate Mall in Abilene. Waymon retired from the western store at age sixty-two but continued to help run the store until Johnnie retired as well.

Though never a horse-riding cowboy, Waymon was the epitome of his hero, John Wayne. His quote "Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway." describes Waymon's true nature. He believed you should face life head-on. He worked hard in his business and believed you should work for what you want in life. You should always do your best and handle your responsibilities. He was known for his honesty and fair play. He loved to laugh and lived life to its fullest. He adored Johnnie his wife of seventy-three years, his children and his grand and great grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, one daughter, a daughter-in-law, four grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
