George Robert Vance was born on July 27, 1858 at Dunham, Quebec. After his father Charles sold the family farm in 1878, they immigrated to the United States and arrived in Glendale, Montana sometime in the summer months of 1879. George Vance would marry the daughter of a notable Montana Pioneer, Henry Smith Pond. George and Mary would have three children, Bertha Ethel, Royaston and Percival and would make Glendale their home. George was a man of many talents, first establishing himself as a general merchant, later, a hotel owner, liquor dealer, constable, butcher, stage operator, meat inspector, among the many! George would eventually relocate his wife and children to Melrose and this is where George would live out the remainder of his life. George passed away on March 22, 1943. He is at rest on top the hill that overlooks Melrose, Montana.
