He was the youngest child of Rev. William Artz, pastor of Organ Lutheran Church, and his second wife, Susan Caroline Carriker Artz. His father died only 34 days after he was born.

First wife was Minnie Augusta Canup, daughter of William M. Canup and wife, Mary Margaret "Polly" Bame, of Rowan County NC

Callie Mavis (1906-1967)
Marvin Lee (1908-1997)

Minnie died 30 May 1917 when her 4 youngest children were under the age of 15.

His second wife was Mary Lewis Crouse whom he married on 11 Dec 1917. They divorced in Rowan County NC in 1920. No children from this marriage.

His third wife was Margaret C. Smith whom he married in 1921 and divorced in 1939, both in Rowan County NC. No children from this marriage.

He lived in his home on Mount Hope Church Road in Faith NC with the family of his youngest child, Edna Fay Artz Kluttz, when he died. Edna had died the previous August 1945 just 7 months before his death.
