William Beebe was my grandfather, but I never knew him. He was the son of Frederick and Ellen Jane (Sensabaugh) Beebe.

William married Gladys Louella (LINCOLN) Edwards on 11 April 1923. They had five children - one son and four daughters.

Tragically, Gladys died in 1935 at the age of 35 from cancer. It was rough going after that and all four of the girls briefly landed in an orphanage (group home). From what I remember - the two oldest and the two youngest were separated into different quarters of Whaley House and didn't get to see each often.

My mom told me that Social Services found out that the children's mother had died so they went to inspect their home (because Uncle Fred had gotten into a little bit of trouble with the police). When Social Services got to the house, they decided the children were not being taken care of properly. However, my mom told me that her father had hired a woman to come into the house and clean it either every day or several days a week and to feed the children.

I do know this - the family did not have a lot.

William's step-son Melvin went to live with his birth father, William 'Bill' Edwards, and grandpa William's son Fred went to live with William's brother, Elmer near Onaway, Michigan.

For a living, William hauled ice in the summer and coal in the winter. He proudly served in WWII as a Private in the Medical Unit (he was in his 40's!).

When he was older, my grandfather William Beebe moved into a mobile home that his son, Fred, had bought for him and that is where grandpa Beebe died.

Someone indicated that they had William's obituary and that it reads:

"William Beebe, Kingston, Michigan, Age 61 died Thursday, March 29, 1962, at the home of his son Fred. Funeral service will be held at 1:00pm, Monday, April 2, 1962 from Chappell Funeral Home, Clio, [Michigan]. Rev Ralph Hughes officiating. Burial in Thadford [Thetford] Cemetery.

Mr Beebe may be seen at the funeral home. He was born in Otisville, MI on September 24,1900 and resided in Genesee County most of his life. Mr Beebe was a Veteran of World War II. He was a truck driver most of his life"

As I stated above, I know from my mom and also from pictures that William would haul coal in the winter and ice in the summer.
